Description:
This is gorgeous gown in ivory dating to c.1903.
The gown has a stand collar and yoke in ivory, hand
made lace. Rows of ivory silk satin circle the
neckline and cut across the chest yoke. The bodice
is made of ivory silk chiffon and falls flat from
the shoulders to pleats at the waist which opens
fullness to the stomach and chest. Large ivory
netting falls over the chiffon to below the chest
where it disappears beneath large embroidered and
tatted medallions. Edging the back, square cut yoke
is a border of crisscross ivory silk lacings
through tatted loops. The trimmings extend over the
shoulders to below the bust with ivory silk tassels
hanging from each of the three lacings. Large,
gigot type sleeves fall in gathers from the armcyes
in gathers to the wide net and tatted cuffs. The
same crisscross trimming extends off the shoulders
down the outer sleeve and across the top of the
cuffs. Wide, pleated, ivory silk cummerbund is
attached to the bodice waistline with double loops
at the center back. Hook and eye closures fasten
down the back of both the lining and the outer
shell. The lining is just as gorgeous with each
seam scalloped bound by hand. 11 Stays and padded
bust pads.
The
skirt falls in slight gathers across the front from
the narrow silk waistband and tighter gathers
across the back. Large tatted and embroidered rose
medallions are appliquéd across the skirt.
Two deep slits are on either side of the center
front and edged in ivory silk satin with triangles
on the top. The silk extends to the lower skirt
with a wide border of silk along the hemline.
Around the slits and hem border is a row of the
large ivory netting and than a narrower band of
ivory silk. Within each slit are box pleats of the
same chiffon as the skirt. There is an underskirt
of ivory silk crystal georgette with wide accordion
pleating along the lower skirt. Petticoat of ivory
china silk with an accordion pleated ruffle along
the bottom.

York
Condition:
The ivory chiffon lining under the collar and yoke
has deteriorated. There is one, smaller than a pea,
hole in the right sleeve at the inner arm. The
skirt has one pea size stain that has become a hole
on the center front with three pin size ones as
well. Some scattered pin holes on the center back
seam that hides in the volume of the back skirt.
Several very faint yellowish stains on the lower
back skirt. A couple small tears at the waistline
from not being careful with the hook and eyes. The
silk petticoat is beginning to badly
shatter.
